Panoramica : Erin Gruwell è una giovane insegnante di lettere al suo primo incarico in un liceo. Siamo a Los Angeles nel 1992, poco dopo gli scontri razziali che avevano messo a ferro e fuoco la città. Erin si vede affidare una classe composta da latinoamericani, cambogiani, afroamericanie un unico bianco. Provengono tutti da realtà sociali in cui il degrado e la violenza costituiscono parte integrante della vita quotidiana. Le istituzioni li vedono come un peso morto da "parcheggiare" in attesa che tornino nella strada. "La Gruwell" (così prenderanno a chiamarla i ragazzi) non si arrende né di fronte all'istituzione né di fronte agli allievi che inizialmente la respingono convinti che sia l'ennesima insegnante disinteressata al loro vissuto. Riuscirà a convincerli ad uscire dalla gabbia delle gang e a guardarsi dentro scrivendo dei diari che diverranno un libro.
